The Town of New Tecumseth was officially formed in 1991, but its story dates back to the early 1800s. The name “Tecumseth” honors the legendary Shawnee Chief Tecumseh, who was a pivotal figure in the War of 1812. Each of the town’s three main centers has its own unique heritage: Alliston was founded in 1847 by William Fletcher, who built a mill on the Boyne River; Beeton (formerly Clarksville) became the “Honey Capital” thanks to David Allanson Jones, Canada’s first commercial honey producer; and Tottenham grew around the Toronto, Grey and Bruce Railway in the 1870s.
One of the area’s greatest historical claims to fame is being the birthplace of Sir Frederick Banting, the co-discoverer of insulin and a Nobel Prize winner. Born in Alliston in 1891, Banting’s legacy is preserved today through the Banting Homestead Heritage Park.
