Mount Forest’s History
Mount Forest is located at the junction of Highway 6 and Highway 89 in the township of Wellington North, Ontario, Canada. Prior to becoming a settlement for Europeans, Mount Forest was a hunting ground for the Saugeen Ojibway people, and because of this, sacred burial sites are believed to be located in the White Bluffs region.
By the year 1851, a post office was established in the village, which was originally known as Maitland Hills, as it was thought to be on the Maitland River system, which was found to be incorrect. The settlement was surveyed into lots in 1853 by land surveyor Francis Kerr, naming it Mount Forest, and after the Counties of Wellington and Grey was dissolved in January 1854, the population had grown to 1,185 by 1864, so it qualified to be incorporated as a village, which occurred in 1869.
By 1871, Mount Forest had grown into a prominent residence for settlers and had ten hotels, eight churches, and 18 stores. Later in 1871, the Toronto, Grey and Bruce Railway was completed, welcoming its first train arrival into Mount Forest, and finally, by 1879, Mount Forest had become an incorporated town. Mount Forest has changed gradually throughout the years as it grew in stature and population, and was amalgamated into the new township of Wellington North on 1 January 1999.
In addition, its first public school was built in 1856, originally in the Old Drill Hall, but was deemed to be an unsuitable location because it was beside the Market Square, and was prone to a huge amount of livestock sales. The new high school was built later in 1878, and a third high school was founded in 2004. This culminated in a joining together of students from the neighbouring town of Arthur and students from the Mount Forest district in one school.

The Christmas Cantata is a Mount Forest United Church tradition that goes back a long way. Derek Moore and Klaus Seibert run the event and give locals the opportunity to sing along to well-known carols. The Christmas Cantata is a flexible event and can occur online or in-person as conditions dictate. And it includes speaking and spiritual messages that are appropriate for the time of year.
The Simulator Golf Tournament, organized by the Mount Forest Lions Club is an opportunity for residents to “drive away the winter blues” by enjoying a simulated nine-hole golf session with their peers. The Bunker Sports Bar hosts the event and all proceeds go to charities, such as Dog Guides Canada to support people living with disabilities. Punters wanting to enter need to sponsor a cheque to the Mount Forest Lions Club and must register to take part in the event in advance.
Kids Paint and Create Night, organized by Skate Canada, is an arts and crafts evening, usually held in early spring. Kids get to make their own ribbon or photo holder. The price includes food, a drink and a sign. Space is usually limited, so parents should book in advance. The Sunflower Open, hosted by the Hospice Wellington, is an indoor golf tournament designed to test your skills on a simulated course. The organizers pitch the event as being suitable for all ages and skills levels, giving locals the opportunity to support those with life-limiting illnesses and their families financially. People who want to attend must make a payment in advance. Tee offers are at 9.00 am, 12.00 pm, 6.00 pm, and 9.00 pm. There are plenty of prizes to be won.
