Melancthon’s History
Founded in 1853 and originally part of Grey County before joining Dufferin in 1881, Melancthon was named after the Protestant reformer Philipp Melanchthon. The township was surveyed using a unique method that resulted in its characteristic road grid, now spanning 400 kilometers.
Agriculture has always been the lifeblood of the community. In the 1850s, Irish Catholic settlers established the first churches and schools, creating a tight-knit community of tradespeople and farmers. The original Melancthon post office opened in 1851, serving a scattered population that rallied together to build the “Gravel Road Church” and various blacksmith shops.
Today, the township honors its past through the preservation of its many “one-room schoolhouses,” with a collection of historic photographs permanently displayed at the Township Office. This commitment to heritage, combined with modern infrastructure that makes the area a unique blend of old and new. Community and Culture
Every June, the township celebrates “Melancthon Day,” a local favorite featuring vendors, live music, and firework displays that bring together residents from across the hamlets. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the township is a haven for agritourism, cycling, and hiking, with scenic vistas provided by the nearby Niagara Escarpment.
Cultural life is anchored by the Museum of Dufferin (MoD), located at the corner of Airport Road and Highway 89. The museum hosts the annual “Holiday Treasures” arts and crafts sale, showcasing the handmade work of local artisans. Throughout the year, the township also supports entrepreneurial growth through programs like the Food Business Bootcamp, helping local farmers and food producers turn their harvests into market-ready products.
Winter in the township brings its own set of traditions, including “Christmas in the Mills,” where residents gather to celebrate local volunteers and enjoy the season’s beauty. The community remains active year-round, from senior’s markets in the summer to indoor games and community meetings in the winter months.
