Dundalk’s History
Dundalkโs origins are tied to the Toronto, Grey and Bruce Railway. Originally known as McDowellโs Corners, the settlement moved a mile west in the 1870s to align with the new rail line. It was named after Dundalk, Ireland, and officially incorporated as a village in 1887. The town quickly became a service hub for the surrounding Proton and Egremont townships, supporting gristmills, tanneries, and a wool factory. This railway heritage is still visible today; the local library was even designed with a railway station theme to honor the tracks that once fueled the town’s economy.
The town is famously the birthplace of Agnes Macphail, the first woman elected to the Canadian House of Commons in 1921. Her legacy of social reform and rural advocacy remains a point of immense local pride. Dundalk has also maintained a strong independent streak, evidenced by the Dundalk Herald, which has been family-owned and operated since the 1960s. Even as the town amalgamated into the Township of Southgate in 2000, it has retained its distinct identity as a resilient agricultural and manufacturing centre.
Geographically, Dundalk sits on a “roof-top” plateau, forming the headwaters for several major river systems, including the Grand and Saugeen Rivers. This high elevation contributes to a unique microclimate, often receiving significant lake-effect snow that makes it a favorite for winter trail enthusiasts. Living here means being part of a community that fought to protect its environment and fertile land, most notably during the successful efforts to halt large-scale quarrying in the region.
Community and Culture
Dundalk is a hub for regional recreation, serving as the starting point for the Grey County CP Rail Trailโa multi-use path perfect for hiking, cycling, and snowmobiling. The Dundalk Memorial Park is the heart of local activity, featuring a community centre, arena, and a municipal campground. Every September, the town hosts the Dundalk Fair, a tradition that has drawn visitors for decades with its horse shows, automotive swap meets, and vibrant midway.
Cultural life in Dundalk is anchored by the Southgate Ruth Hargrave Memorial Library. More than just a place for books, the library serves as a community “living room,” hosting everything from LEGO clubs to “Thursday Night Yarnies” and local paint nights. The town also celebrates its 25th anniversary of amalgamation throughout 2025 and 2026 with “Read & Discover” bingo challenges and community scavenger hunts designed to connect residents with local history and hidden gems.
For families, the community offers a safe, close-knit environment with dedicated local schools like Highpoint Community School. Annual events like the Firefighterโs Frolic in June bring the town together with soap box derbies, talent shows, and “Touch-a-Truck” exhibits for children. Whether itโs participating in a fundraiser at the local ball diamond or enjoying a movie night in the park pavilion, Dundalk offers an active, inclusive culture.
